About Baraka Agricultural College

In response to the needs of the newly settled people in Rift Valley Province of the new independent Kenya, the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru established Baraka Farmers Training Centre in 1974.

This was a collaborative effort with the Government, thus establishing partnership and collaboration as basic principles from the very beginning.

In the early years curricula reflected on conventional agricultural training centres with an emphasis on high external input/high output agriculture.

With changing demographic, social and economic conditions it became increasingly obvious that this development approach was not responding to the needs of small-holder farmers.

A watershed in the development of the College was a three-week international workshop - initiated and funded by MISEREOR , longtime, loyal partner of Baraka - on sustainable agriculture held at the college in August 1986.

Subsequently Baraka developed curricula and courses to promote the concept sustainable agriculture.

In the early nineties the name of the institution was changed to Baraka Agricultural College (BAC) and the development concept was extended to include rural development.

Today, all of Baraka's five programmes aim at empowering rural communities of Eastern Africa through promoting sustainable agriculture and rural development ( SARD ).

The Philosophy of BAC is based in the reality that every human person is a unique individual and that she/he has a right to an environment in which she/he can live with dignity.

It is founded on the gospel of Jesus Christ and the desire to bring this "good news" in a practical way to all people, especially the poor.

Based on the social teaching of the Catholic Church the College endeavours to serve all people irrespective of their religion or ethnicity.

All College programmes focus on recognizing human potential, natural resources and the environment as the foundation of economic and social activity.

Baraka Agricultural College (BAC) was founded in 1974 by the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru to educate and train the newly settled farmers of the then Rift Valley Province in Kenya.

Since 1976, the college has been under the management of the Franciscan Brothers.

To respond effectively to the rapidly changing social and economic conditions and needs of increasing number of small-holder farmers in the region, Baraka College curriculum has been promoting sustainable agriculture and rural development (SARD) in Eastern Africa.

Today the mission of Baraka College is to promote SARD in Eastern Africa through the process of dialogue, participatory education, training and research.

Baraka College has based its philosophy on reality that every human person is a unique individual with a right to an environment in which s/he can live with dignity.

Courses and Programmes offered at Baraka Agricultural College

Diploma in Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (DSARD)

The DSARD Programme is a sixteen month course that starts in August each year.

And runs to December of the following year.

The curriculum aims at improving the capacity of students to be effective practitioners and promoters of SARD.

It is designed to empower and build the confidence and self reliance of the student.

The course targets persons from Eastern Africa who are working with rural communities.

The first Diploma in Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (DSARD) Course commenced on August 20, 2006.

This is residential course, however in the near future it will be offered on distance learning as well.

Entry requirements:

Applicants must have a minimum of a certificate in agriculture/rural development from a recognized institution.

They also must have at least one year working with a rural community.

The course is also suitable for persons with higher qualificationswho are committed to empowering rural communities.

Application and entry requirements

Persons interested in this course must apply in writing to the Principal of the college.

The latest application is expected not later than June of every year. The selection is later done through an interview and the course commences in August/September every year

Baraka Agricultural College is convinced the ‘Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development’ (SARD) is an appropriate development strategy in response to the economic, social, environmental and political realities of Eastern Africa.

Baraka Agricultural College’s mission is ‘to promote SARD in Eastern Africa through dialogue, participatory education, training research and extension’.
