First of all, the Palm Beach hotel Dar es Salaam is really quite cheap by Dar-Es-Salaam standards. 110 USD per night. Secondly, it is a bit queerly built, the rooms are all of different sizes and the name of the hotel is somewhat misleading.
The beach is near, but the hotel is across a busy road from the beach.
Overall, the first impression is poorish, but the good sides of the hotel are all there: the rooms (the ones, you should ask for) are quite spacious and clean, shower is okay, free Wi-Fi is available, the food menu is not very big, but quite well cooked - I especially liked the soups.
The small outside tented restaurant area is quieter than it could be expected to be what with the busy road right next to it.
Restaurant-wise: you have to be ready for the
salads to miss some of the components, but the waiters come to warn you about
this and to discuss alternatives.
Excellent hotel to stay close to the city centre if one cannot afford to spend a lot more. Clean. Everything you need is in the room: fridge, sockets, free Wifi; kettle, cups, TV. Adequate shower and toilet.
Very friendly and helpful staff.
Nice bar and restaurant that serves good value for money everyday fare. Garden noisy (traffic) but well visited. Band plays every Friday. Just the spot to stay if on a business trip to Dar or an overnight stay.
The location was perfect for our needs. We like to spend time at the Msasani Peninsula area, so the hotel is located around half way between the city centre and the peninsula area.
To town it is just easy to take a dalla dalla right in front of the hotel. Almost all of the dallas go to Posta from here and it will only cost 200Ts.
From the centre we walked back to the hotel on many occasions, because it was faster on peak hours and it was perfectly safe during the late afternoon when the sun was still up.
(There is also a dalla dalla to Masaki
which would have taken us to the Peninsula, but we did not have the time to
check it out.)
There is also a small Casino in connection to
the hotel, but it is behind soundproof glass doors and hardly noticeable to the
hotel guests. It looked ok.
