St. Johns Community Center College was started in 1957 by the Church Missionary Society to respond to social economic problems of the slum residents in Pumwani.

When the missionaries settled they built a church and spread the gospel among the slum dwellers while caring for the welfare of the residents.

From its inception until 1990’s SJCC had adopted a welfare approach to addressing the needs of the community.
