, including towns, are limited and not equipped to handle most emergencies, especially those requiring surgery.
If you don’t know it, know it from today that Tanzania has one of the worst healthcare records in the world.Talk to locals in Tanzania, about what worries them most in life and the answer will probably be their health and the health of their family.
Look at the statistics and it's easy to see why. Despite record investment over the past years, Tanzania's healthcare performance is still ranked as one of the worst.
Easy access to affordable medical care is nearly unheard of in rural Tanzania. There are no local emergency rooms or ambulance services. To see a doctor, rural farmers often have to hike for miles. And for serious problems, the ill are carried on makeshift stretchers or bicycles by their friends and family -- a bumpy trip that can take hours.
MEDICAL INSURANCE:
You can’t assume your insurance will go with you when you travel to Tanzania. It’s very important to find out BEFORE you leave whether or not your medical insurance will cover you overseas. You need to ask your insurance company two questions:
PREVENTION
• Do not drink tap water unless it has been boiled, filtered, or chemically disinfected
• Do not drink unbottled beverages or drinks with ice.
• Do not eat fruits or vegetables unless they have been peeled or cooked. Avoid cooked foods that are no longer piping hot
INSECT AND TICK PROTECTION
Wear long sleeves, long pants, hats and shoes (rather than sandals). For rural and forested areas, boots are preferable, with pants tucked in, to prevent tick bites.
SWIMMING AND BATHING PRECAUTIONS
Avoid swimming, wading, or rafting in bodies of fresh water, such as lakes, ponds, streams, or rivers.
GENERAL ADVICE
Bring adequate supplies of all medications in their original containers, clearly labeled
BEST MEDICAL FACILITIES IN TANZANIA
In case of real emergency, the nearest major hospital, fully staffed and equipped, is the Aga Khan Hospital in Mombasa. You may even need to fly there (by charter plane if necessary) if things are really serious, but this should be covered by your insurance.
Most tourists go to one of the private medical clinics where staffs speak English and the service is usually better. Of course, this has to be paid for, and costs around US$50 per consultation, but all fees should be covered by your travel insurance. The medical centres also have pharmacies selling medicines and other supplies.
