First class ticket is good and passengers are provided with breakfast, lunch, dinner and free drinking water in a two person compartment; second class service includes two meals and a bed in a four person compartment; third class is for the Kenyans, but seats are limited. Travel to Mombasa By Road

Another method of getting to Mombasa is by road, the city is well connected, highways connect the city with any of the cities of the country (such as Nairobi, Malindi, and Lamu), various cities in Tanzania (including its capital Dar es Salaam) and Uganda.

The road from Nairobi to Mombasa is good and takes about 9 hours but there are a few sections outside the cities that are very poor.

Buses leave for Mombasa both in the morning and in the night, most of the bus journeys are operated by the Kenya Bus service, you can take also the popular "matatus". Taxis and cabs are also available.

Travel to Mombasa By Bus

There are many bus companies running to Mombasa from major cities such as Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret. Buses leave both in the morning and at night, the duration of the trip depends on the condition of the road.

Buses are comfortable and relatively cheap, the fare depends on the bus company. If you are in Nairobi, most offices are located on Accra Road. If you are in Mombasa, most bus offices are on Jomo Kenyatta Avenue.

The most recommended bus companies are: EasyBus, Eldoret Express, Coast Bus, Stallion Bus, Akamba, Kenya Bus Service (tel. 254 41 222 4851), Stagecoach. You should buy your tickets in advance.

Taxis are also available; fares should be negotiated in advance.

Travel to Mombasa By Water

Mombasa has the largest port in Kenya, there are a larger number of International cruises that have stops in Mombasa. Furthermore, a trip in a traditional dhow along the Kenyan coastline is a memorable travel experience, some of the best dhow cruises leave from Nyali.

The ferry service that connected Mombasa with Pemba, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar in Tanzania and also Chiamboni in Somalia is no longer running.
