The first time we did not book before arriving on Lamu and were met off the boat from Manda by a group of local people who took us to the Yumbe House Lodge.
It is in the narrow back streets of the old town and well away from the newer Costa Del Sol type resort hotels that have been built in Lamu over the past 15 years.
If you are expecting air conditioning and a pool bar in your hotel then this is not the place for you to stay.
The rooms are lovely, clean and traditional but basic- cold water showers and latrines
The staff are excellent and very attentive. The breakfast is lovely with fresh fruit and home made breads.
It is peaceful and relaxing, you are really in Africa - and it feels good.
This has a real local feel, don't expect swish service and bubbling hot
water. This is Lamu and this is Africa. The location of the guest house allows
you to experience Swahili culture in the town.
You can request a mosquito net.
